We are so inundated with media these days, it can be hard to look at anything these days with a clear head. Asking yourself these questions BEFORE you start marketing your business this year will not only transform the way you navigate your business, but they will also help you to better attract the dream clients you love to work with. Here are 10 questions to ask yourself to help you break free from photography trends in 2025 as a wedding photographer.
10 Questions to Ask Yourself to Break Free From Photography Trends in 2025
1. Ask your community, what are three words that describe my wedding photography?
Go to your Instagram stories or create a TikTok asking your audience to describe your photography work in three words. These can be just general descriptors, for example, when I tried this exercise on my IG stories a few years ago, many people used the words “real”, “authentic” and “nostalgic” when describing my photography. These words helped me SO much when it came to deciding how to describe my wedding photography on my own website, and they also helped me to see if I was advertising with the right kinds of images.
2. What elements of my work or experience do clients talk about the most?
Sometimes you need a little boost to remind yourself what you’re really good at and where your strengths are! Sometimes what you may see as just another thing you do, actually makes a big impact on your client experience. Look through your reviews on Google, look through past texts from clients and see if there are any reoccurring themes in what they’re saying.
3. How do you want your couples to feel when they look at their wedding gallery years from now?
Think about different aspects of scenes from their wedding day you want them to take note of. Do you want them focussed on the details? The emotions? The big picture? How do you want them to look through their photos. What emotions do you want them to feel when they look through their photos. Use this as inspiration when visualizing what you plan to document for your client the day of their wedding. Think through their wants and needs and how you hope to make them feel years from now.
4. What values or experiences shape the way you work as a wedding photographer?
This is the magic sauce that helps you to stand out as a wedding photographer. What is it that makes you stand out from other photographers in the industry. Why should potential clients hire you? What are you super passionate about when it comes to documenting wedding days? What are you not as passionate about when it comes to documenting wedding days? This is your secret sauce when it comes to authentically documenting a wedding day without falling into photography trends.
5. How do you use your editing and shooting style to make your clients feel?
Are your photos light and happy and true to color? Do you like to make things feel a little more intimate and emotional? Do your colors bring a sense of nostalgia, taking clients back to a certain period of photography? How does your editing make your clients feel?
6. What kind of clients and weddings energize you creatively?
And an even better question, WHY do they energize you creatively? Are there details about their session or wedding excites you? What kind of spaces do you prefer to work in? What kind of wedding day layouts work best with your style of documenting.
7. What’s something you can add to your client experience to ensure your clients wedding day feels more like the experience that they’re hoping for?
Can you set up an extra call with them? Do you have a guide you can send over to help them think through their priorities? Do you have a questionnaire that walks them through decision making for their wedding day? Can you customize their emails so that they fit their specific wedding day experience? Leaning into your client experience allows you to really get to know the client and pull inspiration from their vision rather than just taking more photos that fall into photography trends.
8. Where do you pull inspiration from outside of photography trends to influence your work?
When it comes to pulling inspiration, anyone can recreate a Pinterest board. Where are some other areas you can pull inspiration from that fits your brand? If you’re a documentary style photographer, maybe you go out and sketch couples in the park on your days off, take note of the things you notice about their love! Maybe you pull from movies for a more cinematic style photography. If you lean into more editorial looks are you looking through editorial magazines and coffee table books from different areas? Make sure you’re feeding your soul with inspiration that makes sense and leaves room for wonder.
9. If you could create a dream wedding gallery, what would it look like?
Describe the lighting, the location, the feelings you want to capture, the experience you would want your clients to have day of. How do your clients feel throughout the day. Are there any experiences you can encourage your clients to make time for that will help them help you get the photos they’ve always dreamed of for their wedding day? Are there spaces or experiences near the venue or the engagement session that reflect the way you prefer to document your subjects?
10. What do you want your brand to feel like outside of photography? After people connect with you for wedding photography, what more do you want them to see?
You don’t have to become an influencer to market your brand, but you will have to share a little bit about yourself! This is part of what separates you from other photographers in the industry. Think through some parts of your life you would be open to sharing with your potential clients that could help you connect with them and potentially have something in common!
